De Stijl Installation
The De Stijl group focused on abstraction to the point of elimination of any reference to objects in nature. Inspired by this principle, this installation abstracts our architectural environment by using the colored blocks to form the map of CalArts. Even though the work of De Stijl may appear to be simple blocks of primary colors, there is an underlying meaning and structure, since it is an abstraction derived from natural forms. We wanted to celebrate and highlight this point through an interactive experience. When you approach the installation from any angle other than the pointed spot, it may appear to be random shapes suspended in space, similar to how De Stijl works often appear to be random abstractions. When you stand at the marked spot, however, the pieces align to express the harmony of the intended form. Collaboration with Jaime Van Wart, Dasol Jung, and Ran Park.
